~  Oceanfront Sauna  ~

Scandanavian Barrel Sauna  |  Ocean Dip / Cold Shower  |  Rest With Fire  |  Repeat...
A R R I V I N G   M I D - F E B R U A R Y
1. Hot : Scandanavian Wood Fired Barrel Sauna
The heat of the sauna increases your blood flow, which can help ease pain and stiffness in sore muscles and move white blood cells through your body more efficiently, likely giving a boost to your body’s ability to fight off infections. The sauna also promotes “deep body and brain connection,” as well as stress relief, both directly and indirectly, thanks to all of the above...
The Western Red Cedar Barrel Sauna (delivery expected mid-February) will be situated in the centre of a private sandy beach, bookable for morning, afternoon and evening sessions of up to 4 hours. It's off-grid, so heat will be supplied by a Harvia wood stove, which can be lit and ready for you in advance, with a supply of dry fire wood to hand. Steam sauna or dry sauna, the choice is yours...
As is the spectacular view...
The configuration of the benches at the sides with the heater between them on the back wall, is designed for lounging in the sauna whilst gazing out of the glass front at the lightshow playing over the Lambert Channel, Hornby and Texada Islands, and the Coastal Range behind the Sunshine Coast. When you're ready for the next cycle, step out onto the front deck to go for an ocean plunge, or take a cold shower in harvested rainwater right there on the deck...

2. Cold : Ocean Dip
"The rocky beach is amazingly secluded, and beautiful to swim in."  Elizabeth N, Eagle View, Jul '21
For the purist, a dip in cold salt water is the ultimate "Cold Plunge". Here that experience takes place in a safe ocean, on a deserted shore, surrounded by scenery to die for - islands and snow capped mountain ranges...
Or : Cold Rainwater Shower
The sauna is within a stone's throw of the high-tide line, but if it's low tide, or for any other reason a walk to the ocean doesn't appeal, a rainhead shower delivering cold, filtered (potable) rainwater will always be on-hand, right outside the sauna door on the side of the deck.
Plunging into cold water starts a cascade of health benefits, including the buildup of brown adipose tissue and resultant fat loss, reduced inflammation that facilitates a fortified immune system, balanced hormone levels, improved sleep quality, and the production of endorphins, the feel good chemicals in the brain that naturally elevate your mood and that also help to reduce pain, thus stimulating a general feeling of contentment and happiness. So in Winter you may actually find your brief dip in the cold ocean surprisingly pleasant.

In Summer the water will feel cold initially, giving your body the required thermal shock, but it is usually warm enough for a good swim.

"Thermotherapy is a treatment that involves alternating between hot and cold temperatures, followed by a rest period. This relaxation ritual is based on a 2000-year-old tradition founded in Nordic countries.
"Better sleep, improved physical health, accelerated recovery and healing… the benefits from thermotherapy are many. You might be surprised, but studies show that thermotherapy can also help fight mild depression, loss of appetite and anorexia."
4. Repeat, Repeat, Repeat...
With sessions lasting up to 4 hours, you have plenty of time to repeat the hot-cold-rest cycle a few times if you wish. And don't worry, you shouldn't have to tear yourself away from the beach during that time, because you will find a composting toilet, a hand washbasin and drinking water within the boathouse on the other side of "the log" that divides the Sauna Beach from the Beach Garden. (The boathouse is also where the furniture and equipment are to be kept.)

"Highly recommend using the wonderful fire pit. For wildlife lovers, on the property's beach in the evening, we saw seals and a family of about ten river otters swim by. There was also some sort of eagle convention going on."

The Site
A secluded, crescent shaped sandy beach approximately 45' in length, has been created on our oceanfront land specifically for the Scandanavian Barrel Sauna. Following the snow-melt we've had unusually heavy rains in the last month or two, and whilst our site drainage performed well, it was overwhelmed. That combined with fierce storms and a "king tide", showed us where we needed to beef it up and improve the 'sea-defences' along our 200' waterfront. As I write on January 20th., the weather has calmed down, although the improved drainage has been well tested and has worked as planned. The landscaping is on target to be completed by the time the sauna is expected to arrive, in mid-February.
